Course of the Operation

Operation 'Shield '94' was a counteroffensive of the Army of Republika Srpska from 4 to 20 November 1994. After the ARBiH in Operation Grmeč '94 (about 13,000 troops) had captured about 250 km² of territory by 31 October, the VRS recaptured all the lost ground by 20 November with this counteroffensive. Bihać was thus semi-encircled again.

Key Facts

!

ARBiH had about 13,000 troops in Operation Grmeč '94

!

About 250 km² captured by 31 October, all recaptured by 20 November

Outcome

VRS recaptured the full 250 km²; Bihać semi-encircled.

Background

Operation “Shield ‘94” was a counteroffensive of the Army of Republika Srpska from 4 to 20 November 1994. It followed after the ARBiH, in Operation Grmeč ‘94 (with about 13,000 troops), had captured about 250 square kilometers of territory by 31 October.

Course of the operation

The VRS, with this counteroffensive, recaptured all the lost ground by 20 November. The offensive aimed to recover the territory lost in Operation Grmeč ‘94 and to semi-encircle Bihać, thereby creating renewed pressure on the Bihać Pocket.

Outcome

The VRS recaptured the full 250 square kilometers, and Bihać was again semi-encircled. This nullified the territorial gains the ARBiH had achieved in Operation Grmeč ‘94.

Significance

Shield ‘94 shows how unstable territorial changes were on this front - what was won in one offensive was lost in a counteroffensive a few weeks later. Bihać was again under pressure.
